Abstract :

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pathology of unknown aetiology which causes generalised muscular pain, associated to poor night-time rest and tiredness, affecting physical, psychic and social factors of the patient. In view of its high prevalence among the general population, affecting 2.4% of the Spanish population aged over 20, and the complex nature of its treatment, it requires consensus of actions that serve as a guide to health professionals. In this review we hope to combine current knowledge in medical literature although it should be pointed out that every day a whole host of studies and medical references deal with the theme with greater or lesser scientific rigour. We will explain the diverse therapeutic modalities that have been described, basing our argument on the best scientific evidence available on the findings and recommendations that are most relevant for treating and dealing with patients with FM. At present, there is not a unanimous criterion for its treatment, or any drug that is specifically approved for treating FM, therefore, when treating it, it is fundamental to deal with it from a multidisciplinary point of view based on moderate physical exercise, pharmacological and psychological treatment.
